Not for the first time this year, I find myself wondering where the time has gone. As well as pictures I try to publish a blog about once a month but I note with a sense of chagrin that it's actually been well over a month since I last wrote. Which means that summer has had had her last hurrah and Autumn has been busy turning green to reds, yellows and golds. From a photography perspective it's a rich and colourful time of the year. Some of my favourite shots were taken this time of year and they hang on my walls at home as a testament to my love of them.
We live in a digital age but the truth is until you've seen a beautiful digital image, printed mounted and framed you really can't truly appreciate the beauty that some of these scenes portray. It is fair to say that all of the seasons have their merit from a photography point of view but I think for most photographers autumn is the standout season and the reason you ask?
It's actually for the most mundane of reasons, taking great autumnal shots is all about timing! Right now, as I write its just a tad early, the trees are still more green than otherwise despite there being plenty of gold and brown leaves all over the floor. I want to visit Stowe, it is Spectacular when its trees are "on the turn" but I'm not sure it's the right time; of course the "right time" will occur during the week when I have to do my day job. My boss is pretty ameniable but he draws the line at taking random days off for taking pictures!
Stowe is beautiful anytime of year and if you're a fan of follies, you really need to get down there, my personal favourite is the Gothic Folly, you can stay in it! You get unfettered access to the gardens from dusk to sunrise and all day long. As you can imagine it's not cheap during the summer months (it's National Trust after al!) but this time of year it's pretty cheap, of course the downside is it's a folly! No heating / plumbing or amenities; still not for the first time I've been tempted...
What else have I been up to? As I get older, I've been inclined to revisit the places I visited in my youth, which frankly, is much longer ago than I feel entirely comfortable with! Don't be fooled, I'm happy with where I am (I'm in the best shape of my life thanks to salsa and photography!), last year I visited Arundel and Littlehampton ( my first ever sale was a result of this visit!) .
This year I went to Dorset. some of the images from my trip have already been seen, Corfe Castle, I have more to share from my trip. Portland Bill, Weymouth, Ope Cove, St Catherines Chapel... fabulous , quintessentially English places. People seem to think Dorset starts and ends with Durdle Dor and Lulworth cove; that it's a place you drive through to get to Devon, well you are doing yourself a disservice!
So, thanks for reading.Wish me luck with my timing.. we part-time photographers really do need it. It'd a two way street, you'll get to see the results.
